To achieve expert results, please take the time to carefully read and understand the following directions before you begin your restoration project. These directions are meant to be general guidelines only and do not cover every application or environmental situation. If you have remaining questions or concerns, please call us toll-free for technical assistance.
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES. ALWAYS WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. Please heed all labeled warning and caution notices on all products.
Theoretical coverage at one mil (25 µm) is 375 sq.ft. per gallon/9.2 m² per liter. Recommended thickness of two mils (50 µm) would require two full coats. Three coats recommended for marine applications. Material losses during mixing and application will vary and must be taken into consideration. Expect up to 50% less coverage on bare wood, rough or sandblasted surfaces.
ALWAYS USE PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYE WEAR.
For best results, apply Diamond Finish over existing primers and never directly over unprimed metal or other surfaces.
TOP COATING OVER PRIMERS AND/OR OTHER FULLY CURED COATINGS:
Clean the surface with conventional surface panel prep solution and/or KBS AquaKlean, scuff with 600-1200 sandpaper and clean again, allow to dry.
TOP COATING FRESHLY APPLIED RUSTSEAL:
Less than 24 hours old - Apply DiamondFinish directly as no other prep is required.
For all other applications, lightly sand with 320 grit paper then clean & dry surface as suggested prior before top coating with DiamondFinish. NOTE: The use of Fusion SEP as an intermediary coating over existing coatings is advisable as it will allow for a more even finish and coverage but not mandatory.
TOP COATING WOOD:
Remove any loose previous coatings, sand smooth & remove dust.
TOP COATING FIBERGLASS:
Clean surface with KBS AquaKlean diluted 10 parts warm water to 1 part AquaKlean. Scuff with 600-1200 grit sandpaper and clean again. Allow to dry.
ALWAYS WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA.
Ideal application temperatures are 55-82ºF (13-28ºC). Use only in moderate to dry atmospheric conditions Avoid rainy or high heat/humidity conditions.
DO NOT PAINT OUT OF CAN! Do not shake can. Stir thoroughly & frequently using stirring & lifting motion. Dispense a working amount of DiamondFinish into a separate container (steel or glass is best) and seal original can immediately. Keep can groove free of paint by using a scoop or KBS Paint Spout. Use plastic wrap between the lid and the top of the can to stop metal to metal contact as DiamondFinish Top Coat can permanently seal the lid. Unused paint should NEVER be put back into the can as it will shorten its shelf life and cause pressure build-up possibly popping the lid. If there is any trouble resealing the can lid tightly, transfer and store DiamondFinish in a proportionally sized clean glass jar or new paint can. Always store in a cool dry place.
Apply DiamondFinish to clean & dry prepared surfaces using a bristle brush, foam brush, roller, or spray equipment. DiamondFinish has superior self-leveling characteristics. Brush marks will flow out nicely. When brushing apply full covering coats, AVOID PUDDLING OR POOLING.
IF SPRAYING, ALWAYS WEAR AN AIR SUPPLIED RESPIRATOR AND EYE PROTECTION: NIOSH/MSHA approved organic vapor particulate respirator. Thinning is not generally required if brushing. When spraying, 10%-15% is normally adequate. DiamondFinish may be thinned up to 30%. Use KBS Thinner ONLY. When spraying: Spray pressure of 35-45 psi/250-330 kpa for siphon/pot guns and 25-35psi/170-250 kpa for gravity/top container guns. Always apply a MINIMUM of 2 covering coats, apply a thin covering initial coat followed by a moderate to full coat (2 mils/50 microns each) for general applications. For marine or industrial applications, apply a MINIMUM of 3 thin covering coats (2 mils/50 microns each). Re-coating can be done once the first or consecutive coat is dry-to-touch and does not leave a fingerprint. Remember to clean your spray gun immediately after using DiamondFinish. FOR BEST END RESULTS, always apply coats consecutively within 6 hours of each coat curing. Average cure times are 2-3 hours, depending on humidity levels. NOTE: Do not apply DiamondFinish in wet or high heat/humidity conditions to avoid too rapid curing. Do not apply DiamondFinish too thick or too soon between coats. In each of these instances, surface bubbling may result as released carbon dioxide becomes entrapped beneath the top surface layer of paint.
Use KBS #1 Thinner for immediate clean up including your spray gun.
IMPORTANT: Remember DiamondFinish must be cleaned up before it dries. It cannot be removed by any solvent once cured. Always wear protective gloves to avoid skin contact and temporary staining. If skin contact accidentally occurs, immediately remove with #1 Thinner or lacquer thinner followed by soap and water. If DiamondFinish should stain your skin, only the course of time will remove it.
- If painting in conditions of high temperature and/or humidity, thin DiamondFinish more than normal to avoid gassing.
- Do not use UV or bake lights to cure DiamondFinish.
- DiamondFinish will take 4 days to become hard under normal conditions and will continue to harden over the following weeks.
- In spray booths, use low air flow and moderate temperatures for curing.
- DiamondFinish can be cut and polished as a normal Top Coat after 24 hours under normal conditions.
