Spot Treating Rust Now Prevents Big Problems Later
Winter
brings many challenges for car and truck owners, and one of the most insidious
is rust. While most people check for rust on the car’s body panels or topside
areas, the underside of a vehicle is often ignored. Yet metal in the floor
pans, suspension components, frame rails, and other structural areas can
corrode quietly. When left untreated, this rust can compromise the vehicle’s
strength, safety, and longevity.

Applying Rust Converter

The
good news is that small areas of rust or exposed metal can be spot treated to
prevent further damage. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fix rust on your
car’s undercarriage before winter using KBS Rust Converter and RustSeal, providing a step-by-step approach to protect your vehicle from winter
salt and moisture.

Why Winter Is the Worst Time for Undercar Rust
Road
salt, moisture, and fluctuating temperatures make winter especially harsh on
your vehicle’s underside. Even minor scratches or areas of exposed metal can
quickly form rust. While it’s easy to notice rust on doors, fenders, and hoods,
hidden areas under the car are just as vulnerable—and often more critical
because they carry structural loads.
Common areas under
a car or truck that are prone to rust include:
Floor pans and cross members
- Suspension arms, brackets, and mounts
- Rocker panels and wheel wells
- Exhaust hangers and underbody shields
Why
address these areas now? Because rust doesn’t just affect appearance—it weakens
the metal. Over time, rust can compromise suspension mounts, structural
members, and other critical components, creating safety hazards. Treating these
areas before winter ensures rust doesn’t spread and metal doesn’t degrade
further.

Spot Treatment for Rust Prevention
Not
all rust requires full restoration or metal replacement. Exposed metal areas
where rust has already formed—or where it might form later—can be spot treated
to stop corrosion and prevent new rust. Spot treatment is especially useful for
winter prep, when protecting vulnerable areas from salt and moisture is
critical.
Benefits of Rust Spot Treatment Before Winter
- Stops existing rust from spreading
- Protects bare metal from winter moisture and road salt
- Minimizes future labor and repair costs
KBS
Coatings offers two highly effective products to address undercar rust:
- KBS Rust Converter – Converts existing rust into a hard, stable surface.
- KBS RustSeal – A durable rust-preventive coating for both bare and lightly rusted metal.

These
products are designed to stop rust in its tracks and provide a long-lasting
protective barrier against winter corrosion.
KBS Rust Converter: Transform Rust into a Durable Surface
KBS
Rust Converter is a tannic-acid-based aerosol that quickly neutralizes rust,
transforming it into a hard, bluish-black ferric tannate layer. It stops
existing rust and creates a durable, paintable surface. Ideal for spot-treating
small or large rusted areas on your car or truck’s undercarriage—frame,
suspension, or floor pan—Rust Converter offers a fast, economical solution for
winter rust protection.
Benefits of Using Rust Converter for Winter Prep
- Instant rust neutralization — stops existing rust from spreading
- Minimal preparation required — saves labor time
- Paintable surface — creates a base for topcoats if desired
- Economical — perfect for large or small rusted areas under your vehicle
KBS RustSeal: Long-Lasting Rust Protection
While
Rust Converter neutralizes existing rust, KBS RustSeal provides a long-term
protective barrier for both rust-free and lightly rusted surfaces. RustSeal is
a 1K moisture-cured urethane coating that is extremely hard, yet flexible. This
helps to prevent chips, cracks, and peeling. Keeping the metal sealed against
moisture, oxygen, and road salt, the primary causes of rust. RustSeal can be
applied to bare metal or treated rust, making it ideal for spot repairs or
preventative maintenance.
Benefits of Using RustSeal for Winter Prep
- Encapsulates rust permanently - preventing it from spreading
- Flexible and durable — absorbs impacts without cracking, chipping, or peeling
- Smooth, professional finish — looks like a ceramic coating
- Excellent adhesion for topcoats or paint
- Available in 11 attractive colors for custom applications
- Protects non-rusted areas as preventative winter maintenance
Inspect Metal Integrity
Before
and after treating rust, inspect for weak or damaged areas. Even small rust
spots can indicate compromised metal. Spot repairs using Rust Converter and
RustSeal can preserve metal integrity and prevent the need for costly
structural repairs.
Preparing the Surface for Rust Converter
Proper
surface preparation is essential for maximum results. Here’s how to prepare
rusted areas for KBS Rust Converter:
- Check the surface: Rust Converter is designed for areas that are already rusty. It is not suitable for bare metal or surfaces that mix rusted and non-rusted areas.
- Remove loose rust: Use a wire brush or 320 grit sandpaper to remove flaky rust.

Clean the area with KBS Klean:
- Removes dirt, grease, and oil without leaving residue
- Mix KBS Kleanwith hot water
- Apply with a sponge or scrub brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry

Applying Rust Converter
- Shake the aerosol can for at least one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Shake occasionally during use for even coverage.
- Spray 8–12 inches from the surface with steady, even strokes.
- A chemical reaction occurs as the rust turns black, indicating conversion.
- Rust Converter will be dry to the touch in 10 minutes and can be recoated or top coated after 24 hours.
- Rust Converter can be left as-is or directly painted over for appearance.

instructions for Rust Converter can be found HERE.

Preparing the Surface for RustSeal
Remove loose paint or rust:
- Use a wire brush or 320 grit sandpaper.
Clean with KBS Klean:
- Mix Klean with warm water, scrub with a sponge or brush, rinse, and dry.
Treat with KBS RustBlast:
- RustBlast is a zinc phosphate pre-primer and metal etch
- Dissolves rust and corrosion while etching metal for adhesion
- Spray, keep wet for 30 minutes–2 hours, scrub intermittently
- Rinse and dry; a whitish residue enhances paint adhesion
Full instructions for RustBlast can be found HERE.

Applying RustSeal
- Choose your application method: Brushing, rolling, or spraying; brushing is generally best for undercar spot repairs.
- Optimal temperature: Apply between 55–82°F, avoiding rain or high humidity.
- Mix thoroughly: Stir from the bottom of the can to the top before use.
- Apply in thin coats: At least three thin, even coats; multiple thin coats are better than a few thick ones.
- Re-coating: Once the previous coat is dry to the touch (2–6 hours), apply additional coats within 8 hours.
- Cure time: The area can be handled after 1 day, and full cure takes place in 7 days.
- Top-coating: RustSeal can also be top-coated with a variety of paints and coatings, including KBS BlackTop and Top Coater.

Rust Converter vs RustSeal — Which Is Better?
- KBS Rust Converter: Neutralizes existing rust quickly and economically
- KBS RustSeal: Encapsulates treated and bare metal, providing a durable, smooth, flexible, AND long-lasting barrier against corrosion
Recommendation: For the longest-lasting protection, KBS always
recommends prepping the area with KBS Klean and RustBlast and finishing with
RustSeal. This combination ensures rust is neutralized, sealed, and protected
against winter hazards.
Conclusion
Winter
is harsh on vehicles, especially the underside where rust can hide and spread
unnoticed. Exposed metal, suspension components, and floor pans are susceptible
to corrosion from road salt and moisture. Spot treating rust today prevents
costly structural damage tomorrow and ensures your vehicle remains safe.
