Rust Converter vs. RustSeal: Quick Recap

Rust Converter neutralizes rust by turning it into a hard black material. It applies quickly and is economical. RustSeal is a rust preventive coating that encapsulates treated or bare metal for a durable long-lasting barrier and a better appearance.

KBS BlackTop: Beautiful, Durable, UV Stable Topcoat for Rust Converter and RustSeal

Topcoating is optional with Rust Converter but recommended with RustSeal, which isn’t intended as a final finish for surfaces exposed to direct sunlight as it may alter its color or sheen. Its rust protection, however, remains fully effective. To protect against unwanted cosmetic changes, topcoat RustSeal with any opaque paint system.

KBS BlackTop is a popular topcoat for steel fences treated with RustSeal. This 1K, moisture-cured, UV-stable urethane coating is extremely hard yet flexible. This flexibility helps prevent chips, cracks, and peeling, keeping surfaces protected from impacts, moisture, and prolonged sun exposure. BlackTop can be applied by brush, roller, or spray and is available in Gloss Black, OEM Satin Black, and Flat Black to achieve the desired finish.

Benefits of BlackTop 1K Coating

  • Extremely durable — resists impacts, chips, and cracks
  • Flexible yet rock-hard — maintains protection without peeling
  • Smooth, professional finish — self-leveling for a flawless look
  • UV and fade resistant — maintains color and sheen over time
  • Easy application — works on metal, primer, and existing coatings

Assess Rust and Damage Before Restoring Your Steel Fence

The first step in the restoration process is determining whether the rust is surface-level or has penetrated deeper and weakened the metal. Deep corrosion may require metal repair or replacement of affected sections.

Walk the entire length of the fence and document all problem areas. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Rust spots: Note if they are superficial or if they are flaking and scaling, which indicates deeper corrosion.
  • Structural integrity: Look for any sections that are sagging, leaning, or bent.
  • Joints and fasteners: Closely examine any areas where posts, panels, screws, and nails connect, as moisture can collect there and cause corrosion.
  • Fence base: Check the sections near the ground, as they are often exposed to the most moisture.
  • Paint and coating: Look for bubbling, peeling, or chipped paint, which exposes the underlying metal to moisture and oxygen.

Choose the Desired Restoration Level

Do you want to just address rusty areas, or do you want to treat and refinish the entire fence? Do you want the most durable, long-lasting results, or are you willing to forego ultimate longevity for a faster, easier project? Answering these questions will make it easier to choose the right approach for restoring your steel fence.

How Do I Use Rust Converter on a Steel Fence?

Rust Converter neutralizes existing rust and applies more quickly than RustSeal. The trade-off is durability and appearance, as RustSeal delivers a longer-lasting, tougher, and more visually appealing finish.

How to Prepare a Steel Fence for Rust Converter

Proper preparation of the steel is essential for best Rust Converter adhesion and finish quality. Here’s how to prepare the fence for KBS Rust Converter:

  • Check the surface: Rust Converter is designed for areas that are already rusty. It is not suitable for bare metal or surfaces that mix rusted and non-rusted areas.
  • Remove loose rust: Use a wire brush or 320 grit sandpaper to remove loose flaky rust. Don’t completely remove all rust, just the loose rust.
  • Clean the fence with KBS Klean:
    • Removes dirt, grease, and oil without leaving residue
    • Mix KBS Klean with hot water
    • Apply with a sponge or scrub brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry

 Applying Rust Converter

  • Shake the aerosol can for at least one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Shake occasionally during use for even coverage.
  • Spray 8–12 inches from the surface with steady, even strokes.
  • A chemical reaction occurs as the rust turns black, indicating conversion.
  • Rust Converter will dry to the touch in 10 minutes and can be recoated or top coated after 24 hours.

Topcoating Rust Converter: Optional

Rust Converter can be left as-is or directly topcoated with KBS BlackTop, Top Coater or a variety of other paint formulations including acrylic, oil-based, enamels, urethanes and polyurethanes.

Restoring a Steel Fence with RustSeal

RustSeal bonds to bare metal, treated rust, and well-adhered existing coatings. Creating a barrier that seals surfaces from moisture and oxygen, stopping existing rust and preventing future corrosion. It provides a longer lasting, and more visually appealing solution than Rust Converter.

Preparing a Steel Fence for RustSeal Application

  1. Remove Loose, Flaky Rust

Start by removing loose, flaky rust and paint. This can be done with a wire brush, sandpaper or by sandblasting.

  • Wire brush or 320 grit sandpaper: Keep in mind that RustSeal can be applied directly over rust treated with RustBlast, allowing light surface rust to remain while still providing effective protection. Effectively reducing labor time.
    • Lightly scuff any well-adhered original paint with 320-grit sandpaper before proceeding.
  • SandBlasting: Offers the fastest and most thorough way to completely remove rust. When sandblasting, use of Rustblast isn’t needed; RustSeal can be directly applied to newly sandblasted (fresh and not recycled sand) metal surfaces that have been handled with gloved hands. No preparation other than blowing off loose dust is required. Proceed to “Applying RustSeal to the Steel Fence” after sandblasting.
  1. Clean with KBS Klean

Applying RustSeal to a Steel Fence

  • Choose your application method: Brushing, rolling, or spraying; brushing is generally best for spot repairs.
  • Optimal temperature: Apply between 55–82°F, avoiding rain or high humidity.
  • Mix thoroughly: Stir from the bottom of the can to the top before use.
  • Apply in thin coats: At least three thin, even coats; multiple thin coats are better than a few thick ones.
  • Re-coating: Once the previous coat is dry to the touch (2–6 hours), apply additional coats within 8 hours.
  • Cure time: The area can be handled after 1 day, and full cure takes place in 7 days.

Topcoating RustSeal: Recommended

RustSeal can be topcoated with a variety of paints and coatings, including KBS BlackTop, Top Coater and a variety of other paint formulations.

Topcoating RustSeal is recommended as it isn’t intended as a final finish for surfaces exposed to direct sunlight as it may alter its color or sheen. Its rust protection, however, remains fully effective. To protect against unwanted cosmetic changes, topcoat RustSeal with any opaque paint system.

Topcoat Application Options

  1. Apply your top coat once the second or final coat oWhat Rust Protection Should I Use for a Steel Fence?
  • KBS Rust Converter: Neutralizes existing rust quickly and economically
  • KBS RustSeal: Encapsulates treated and bare metal, providing a durable, smooth, flexible, and long-lasting barrier against corrosion

Recommendation: For the longest-lasting protection, KBS always recommends prepping the area with KBS Klean and RustBlast and finishing with RustSeal and a topcoat. This combination ensures rust is encapsulated and neutralized, and the metal is sealed and protected.
