RustSeal Overview

RustSeal - Stop Rust - Paint Over Rust

RustSeal is an incredible, single-component, ready-to-use, high solids content, rust preventive coating with exceptional sealing properties.

No other brand is tougher on rust! Using premium quality materials and advanced color formulations, this high tech performance coating is the present-day answer for 21st century rust protection.

RustSeal is the most permanent cost-effective solution for stopping rust and corrosion anyplace where it is a problem: home, automotive, industry, fleet, farm & more!

Unlike other corrosion treatments, RustSeal is an enhancement that lasts. Water and air are locked out, therefore oxidation, the precursor to rust, cannot take hold.

It’s technology that’s unbeatable! Satisfaction guaranteed!

  • Mold and mildew resistant
  • High abrasion and chemical resistance
  • Repels fuels, oils, most acids & alkalis, and graffiti

  • Brush, roll or spray application
  • Superior flow and leveling
  • Flexible coating allowing expansion and contraction
  • Compatible with all paint systems

Note: RustSeal is not intended for use as a final finish. Repeated or prolonged exposure to direct UV light will cause cosmetic alteration to its color and sheen. RustSeal’s guaranteed rust protective properties, however, will not degrade. In areas not exposed to direct UV light, like the underside of a car, RustSeal will seal as well as serve as a great looking final finish. To protect against unwanted cosmetic changes, topcoat RustSeal with any opaque (solid color) paint system. Please note that a clear topcoat cannot provide the needed UV protection. Choose the closest color associated RustSeal primer to compliment your topcoat and protect against potential visible surface chips.

RustSeal Applications

Automotive: chassis • floor pans • wheel wells fenders • trunks • engines • suspension parts • axles • roof drains • springs • doors • almost every part on a car except the exhaust!

Marine: engine rooms • hulls • masts • bilges • heat exchangers • decks • chain lockers • pumps • fuel tanks • boat trailers

Industrial: heavy transport • steam pipes • sealing concrete • air conditioning repair • fiberglass repair • rebar coating • steel roof • fuel & waste-water treatment tanks

Household: hand rails • support beams • lawn equipment • garage floors • pipe work • appliances • lead-based paint encapsulation

Questions and Answers

Q: I understand that RustSeal should be top coated if it will be consistently exposed to sunlight. So, how do I top coat RustSeal with a top coat paint so that the top coat paint adheres?

Asked by:  - 8/31/2013

A: There are three effective ways to top coat RustSeal effectively so that the coatings bond & fuse together.

1) Apply your top coat once the second or final coat of RustSeal is dry-to-the-touch and does not leave a fingerprint (usually 3-10 hours depending on temperature and humidity).

2) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), scuff the RustSeal with 300 grit, then apply your top coat.

3) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), dust the RustSeal with Fusion Self-Etching Primer (http://www.kbs-coatings.com/fusion-self-etch-primer.html), let the Fusion cure for 30 minutes, then apply your top coat.

You can feel free to choose the method that will work for you.

Q: I want to know if that product can be applied onto normal paint. I explain the floor of my car as some rust spot but their is also part with good paint. I want to recoat everything with your product. If I clean/degrease with your product and the etch like you instructed can I apply the rustSeal on the original floor paint?

Asked by:  - 2/10/2014

A: Yes, you can coated metal surfaces and painted surfaces with RustSeal. Scuff the painted surfaces with 300 grit and then proceed to do the KBS 3 Step System on the entire surface including the painted and bare metal surfaces.

Q: Can I use lacquer thinner to thin RustSeal for spraying?

Asked by:  - 9/4/2013

A: We do not recommend using lacquer thinner for thinning RustSeal as it is incompatible. However, lacquer thinner can be used for clean up.

For thinning, we recommend using KBS #1 Thinner.

Q: How much RustSeal would be needed to coat a standard car chassis (frame and underbody carriage)?

Asked by:  - 1/2/2014

A: 1 Quart of RustSeal should be enough to coat a standard car frame with 2 coats. If you want to do the entire under body carriage and frame, you will want to get 2 Quarts of RustSeal.

This is the hardest, most durable paint I have ever used. When they say it encapsulates the rust they mean it. BTW, my frame and suspension components look great.

Rating Painted Exterior Suspension Parts

Have painted some exterior suspension parts for my wrangler I have not installed them just yet because of the weather but will be doing as soon as the weather breaks for the warm. I have used other rust preventive paints like ROP15 etc and they work for awhile but over the long haul it dosent seem to hold up as well as they were claiming it does. I discovered this brand of coatings that we used the clear coat on another vehicle that needed some paint work and so far that seems to be very good. So I decided to try the rust seal on some of my lift kit parts that I’m installing on my wrangler soon. I hope this stuff is as good as the clear coat that we used. I guess I’ll see when I install these parts and give it a few years of Ohio weather.

Once again, you've exceeded my expectations with this product. It brushes on very easy and bonds/seals up your metal. I've used this product on the floor pans top/bottom, inner fenders, wheel wells and under the hood of my 1947 Willys CJ2A. It also covers up a lot of minor imperfections.
