Surface Cleaning:
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dirt, oil, grease, and all other contaminants.
If Abrasive Blasting
Abrasive blast surface per specification SSPC-SP 10, “Near-White Blast Cleaning”, or per NACE Standard No. 2 to a profile depth of 1.5 - 2.0 mils maximum, with a 1.5 mil anchor pattern being ideal. Sandblasting using fresh sand (not recycled) usually produces the desired 1.5 mil anchor pattern. Abrasive used in blasting should be selected carefully from materials of mesh size required to produce the desired anchor pattern.
If Not Abrasive Blasting
If abrasive blasting is not permitted, prepare surface by power tool cleaning per SSPC-SP 11. Use 3M brand “Heavy Duty Roto Peen”, type C flap wheel cleaning system mounted on an air-driven motor. This method will provide a surface equivalent to that provided by commercial blast cleaning per SSPC-SP 6, including the desired surface profile.
After abrasive blasting, it is necessary to remove all surface contamination. Slight residues of grease, oil or even fingerprints can ruin any good paint job. Avoid using any solvent based cleaners which leave residues.
Begin by diluting the KBS Klean concentrate with water. The warmer the water, the more effective and powerful the cleaning action of KBS Klean will be. Effective dilution rates will vary according to the type and degree of contaminants as well as surface materials. KBS Klean may be used in power washing equipment. For standard cleaning, apply liberally and scrub surface for 5-10 minutes. For heavy-duty cleaning, extended soaking times up to 24 hours or more may be necessary. Use a bristle brush or scouring pad to expedite the cleaning of heavily soiled surfaces. Retreat surface as necessary until clean. Do not allow KBS Klean to dry before rinsing thoroughly with water. After rinsing, let dry.
After KBS Klean, follow with RustBlast to remove surface rust, etch the metal, and leave a zinc phosphate coating (white powder residue) for superior XTC Primer and XTC adhesion.
Surface Etching:
Ideal application temperature range is 55-82°F (13-28°C). It is always best to apply RustBlast in a shady area and not in direct sunlight.
Liberally apply RustBlast FULL-STRENGTH to the CLEAN DRY SURFACE using a spray bottle or brush. Re-apply often to continually keep the surface wet for a minimum of 10 minutes for smooth or lightly rusted surfaces, 20-40 minutes for moderately rusted surfaces and 1-2 hours for heavily rusted or corroded surfaces. Use a scouring pad as needed. Do not allow RustBlast to dry on surface before rinsing which helps avoid too heavy of a zinc phosphate buildup which can adversely affect the sealing process. After treatment, rinse thoroughly with water gently rubbing the surface with a scuff pad and then allow surface to dry completely.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove every last bit of rust before applying XTC Primer and XTC. XTC Primer is very capable of bonding to & permanently sealing any remaining flash rust or corrosion.
MASKING NOTE: At this point, you can tape and mask off the rotor surface. Although it is absolutely ideal to mask off the rotor surfaces that come in contact with the brake pads, if you do not and do coat the rotor surfaces along with the rest of the rotor, the XTC Primer and XTC will be rubbed off by the brake pads the first couple of times you drive the vehicle.
XTC Primer Aerosol & XTC Aerosol Application:
Ideal application temperature range is 55-82°F (13-28°C). It is always best to apply XTC and XTC Primer in a shady area and not in direct sunlight.
Shake XTC Primer aerosol can vigorously for one minute after mixing ball rattles freely to ensure proper mixing and to prevent sprayhead from clogging. Repeat shaking frequently during use. Hold aerosol can 12-15 inches from surface and apply using steady, even strokes. Apply two thin, covering coats, allowing 15 minutes drying time between coats.
Clean sprayhead immediately after use by turning can upside down and spraying until no more paint appears. If clogging occurs, remove sprayhead and clean with a fine wire. Replace carefully, pointing can and sprayhead away from you. Allow the primed surface to dry a minimum of 30 minutes before top coating with the KBS XTC.
After a minimum of 30 minutes, apply the XTC Aerosol in the same manner as the XTC Primer applying at least 2 thin, covering coats allowing at least 15 minutes in between coats. Remove the masking tape (if applicable) 30 minutes after the last coat of XTC.
Heat Curing:
Full cure, maximum hardness and adhesion will be reached once the heat curing is complete. You can heat cure the rotors by placing them on aluminum foil (to keep clean) in a BBQ grill and heat to 350°F for 20 minutes.
The other option is to put the rotors back on the vehicle after curing in ambient temperature for 12 hours. Once the vehicle is driven a few times heating up the rotors and allowing the rotors to come back down to room temperature naturally, the heat cure will be complete and maximum adhesion and durability will be reached. NOTE: Please avoid puddles the first couple of times you drive the vehicle which could cause the hot rotors to rapidly cool.
Clean Up:
Clean up any overspray with lacquer thinner immediately. Always wear protective gloves to avoid skin contact and temporary staining.
