RustSeal - Stop Rust - Paint Over Rust

RustSeal is an incredible, single-component, ready-to-use, high solids content, rust preventive coating with exceptional sealing properties.

No other brand is tougher on rust! Using premium quality materials and advanced color formulations, this high tech performance coating is the present-day answer for 21st century rust protection.

RustSeal is the most permanent cost-effective solution for stopping rust and corrosion anyplace where it is a problem: home, automotive, industry, fleet, farm & more!

Unlike other corrosion treatments, RustSeal is an enhancement that lasts. Water and air are locked out, therefore oxidation, the precursor to rust, cannot take hold.

It’s technology that’s unbeatable! Satisfaction guaranteed!

RustSeal Features

  • High surface tolerance for many different types of applications
  • Apply directly over treated rust
  • Single component formula
  • High solids content
  • Widest array of (10) non-porous color formulas
  • Combines with atmospheric moisture to cure
  • Excellent surface penetration and adhesion
  • Forms permanent non-porous barrier against moisture and oxygen
  • Waterproof coating strengthened by repeated exposure to moisture
  • Mold and mildew resistant
  • High abrasion and chemical resistance
  • Repels fuels, oils, most acids & alkalis, and graffiti
  • Will not crack, flake or peel

  • Brush, roll or spray application
  • Superior flow and leveling
  • Flexible coating allowing expansion and contraction
  • Compatible with all paint systems
  • VOC compliant
  • Lead-Free

Gloss Levels: Galvanized Steel (30%), Satin Black (70-75%), Gloss Black (85-95%), Other Colors (75-85%)

Note: RustSeal is not intended for use as a final finish. Repeated or prolonged exposure to direct UV light will cause cosmetic alteration to its color and sheen. RustSeal’s guaranteed rust protective properties, however, will not degrade. In areas not exposed to direct UV light, like the underside of a car, RustSeal will seal as well as serve as a great looking final finish. To protect against unwanted cosmetic changes, topcoat RustSeal with any opaque (solid color) paint system. Please note that a clear topcoat cannot provide the needed UV protection. Choose the closest color associated RustSeal primer to compliment your topcoat and protect against potential visible surface chips.

RustSeal Applications

Questions and Answers

Q: I understand that RustSeal should be top coated if it will be consistently exposed to sunlight. So, how do I top coat RustSeal with a top coat paint so that the top coat paint adheres?

Asked by:  - 8/31/2013

A: There are three effective ways to top coat RustSeal effectively so that the coatings bond & fuse together.

1) Apply your top coat once the second or final coat of RustSeal is dry-to-the-touch and does not leave a fingerprint (usually 3-10 hours depending on temperature and humidity).

2) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), scuff the RustSeal with 300 grit, then apply your top coat.

3) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), dust the RustSeal with Fusion Self-Etching Primer (http://www.kbs-coatings.com/fusion-self-etch-primer.html), let the Fusion cure for 30 minutes, then apply your top coat.

You can feel free to choose the method that will work for you.

Q: I want to know if that product can be applied onto normal paint. I explain the floor of my car as some rust spot but their is also part with good paint. I want to recoat everything with your product. If I clean/degrease with your product and the etch like you instructed can I apply the rustSeal on the original floor paint?

Asked by:  - 2/10/2014

A: Yes, you can coated metal surfaces and painted surfaces with RustSeal. Scuff the painted surfaces with 300 grit and then proceed to do the KBS 3 Step System on the entire surface including the painted and bare metal surfaces.

Q: Can I use lacquer thinner to thin RustSeal for spraying?

A: We do not recommend using lacquer thinner for thinning RustSeal as it is incompatible. However, lacquer thinner can be used for clean up.

For thinning, we recommend using KBS #1 Thinner.

Asked by:  - 1/2/2014

This the best paint/sealer I ever used or even heard about...You do have to be careful using it so it doesn't drip on something you don't want painted.

Rating Great product for rust
This product worked great on my rusty old truck. I was worried it would seal shut in the can which the instructions said. So I put it in another container and it dried hard as a rock. So read the directions carefully.

We have recieved numerous comments on the frame and how good it looks. It does everything as advertised. The color choices are an added bonus. We used the galvanized steel chassis coating, and were totally blown away at the finished product.

Use as directed and you will have the toughest, most rust preventing coating out there! Be patient - don't apply too thick too quickly and topcoat Rust Seal before it fully cures.

Rating KBS RustSeal
RustSeal is a tough, durable rust inhibiting coating. I use it on all metal surfaces before applying the final coat. The only bad characteristic that I know is that it dries soooo hard that if you don't get all the remanents off the sealing area of the lid and put the lid on, you can't get the lid back off without tearing it up.
